Today, however, the Internet of Things (IoT) is bringing them all together by combining machine-to-machine (M2M), person-to-machine (P2M), and person-to-person (P2P) connections. According to the Gartner “Digital Business Transformation: Disrupt to Win” report, in 2015 the vast majority of the physical world (99.4 percent) was unconnected. By 2020, however, 75 percent of businesses will become fully digital or preparing to be. In the race to internet-enable everything, however, security is often an afterthought, and cybercriminals are capitalizing on this new era of vulnerability.
