Four Steps To Casting A Clear Vision

By Arlin Sorensen, O and Founder of the Heartland Companies which includes HTG Peer Groups

Vision casting is one of those topics that most people tend to run from. It seems mystical to many. The reality is that not only is it a discipline, but a very important skill to have and implement if you want to succeed both personally and professionally.  Scripture says it most clearly when it says in Proverbs 29 “where there is no vision, the people perish.” Many small businesses today flounder around because the vision has not been defined even by the leaders and certainly has not been shared with the team in a way that compels them to want to participate.

So what is vision casting anyway? It is communicating with your team in a way you paint the picture for the future. It is giving perspective on what can be, and setting the course for how we will reach our mission and dreams. At its core, vision casting is the ability to connect the dots for the team so they can understand the strategy and where they fit in that picture.

There are some key factors that make the transfer of these more effective. So let’s look at how we can do vision casting effectively.

Begin with a clear vision. Amazingly, this is often where people make their first mistake. So many entrepreneurial owners see the process of defining their mission, vision and core values as a waste of time. After all, their staff should already know what those things are. They are on the payroll after all. They should have caught it walking past the owner’s office or picked it up in the hallways from their co-workers.
