Sony's Tape technology is a long line of innovative tape solutions developed and brought to market by Sony. Sony's drives are setting new standards for reliability, capacity and performance in today's most demanding environments. Whether its the economical DDS technology, or the ultra fast and highly intelligent AIT technology, Sony's tape drives are the solution for you.

Product List

Sony AIT-1 Drives
Although tape drives are the most comonly used method for backup in network environments, on lower capacity desktops, workstations, and servers, tape can loose its cost effective advantage. Low-end backup solutions must be low cost and must be easy to use. DDS has been the standard for tape backup in the low-end market over the past decade, but the DDS roadmap does not support the dramatic increases in performance and hard disk capacities that have become the norm. The challenge becomes, finding a low cost, easy to use tape backup solution that will be able to grow as your performance and capacity requirements grow.

Sony's AIT-1 tape drives are based on high-performance AIT technology - simplifying tape backup so users can instead focus on their business. AIT's high capacity allows for most anyone to backup an entire system on one AIT tape - that fits inside a shirt pocket! It's an ideal solution for anyone working on laptops, desktop PCs, workstations, and even small servers who need to reliably store and access large amounts of data. And, the retail price of an AIT-1 drive is now less than that of a DDS-4 drive. What's more, the AIT roadmap offers an impressive growth path with backward read-and-write compatibility, so you can upgrade your performance and capacity as needed.

Sony AIT-1 Turbo Drives
The price for new PCs and servers has been decreasing for years, while performance and capacity have been increasing. More computer for less money is the name of the game. With that increasing capacity, comes the need to have increased backup capabilities. However, in the low-end market, the choices for costeffective tape backup drives have been limited to low capacity, low performance drives.

Sony's new AIT-1 Turbo drives are based on the field-proven, high-density, high-performance AIT tape technology. Performance and capacity improvements provide a supercharged tape drive for the low end market, while providing aggressive lowered pricing to address cost sensitive budgets. AIT – A hallmark of Sony's commitment to technological excellence.

Sony AIT-2 V Series Drives
IT budgets are shrinking, while network storage capacities continue to increase. And with tighter budgets, buying into technologies that will be there tomorrow and in the future is more important than ever. The challenge becomes finding cost-effective, efficient storage solutions with a migration path to support future growth trends.

Sony's AIT-2 drives have been engineered to offer efficient storage solutions. The compact footprint of both the drive and media allow for more efficient use of space. More drives can be installed in smaller systems, utilizing less floor space in the computer room. More media cartridges can be stored on less shelf space, reducing the overall cost of archiving data. AIT-2 drives and media are priced extremely competitively when compared cost per GB to other competing technologies. What's more, the AIT roadmap offers investment protection with an impressive growth path and backward compatibility, allowing you to upgrade as your performance and capacity requirements increase.

Sony AIT-2 Turbo Drives
End-users in the low end to midrange segment are faced with many challenges surrounding their tape backup solutions. As storage capacity requirements continuously increase, backup windows decrease, and budgets constrict to their lowest possible limits. End-users need a tape backup solution that will allow for higher capacity backups, within a shorter period of time, while reducing overall costs. Unfortunately, this market has traditionally been limited to low capacity and performance solutions at an economical price, or higher capacity and performance solutions at a premium price.

Sony's AIT-2 Turbo drives provide the best of both worlds—high capacity, high performance, and economical pricing. In addition, AIT-2 Turbo offers unique advantages to the low end to midrange tape backup users. AIT-2 Turbo provides all of the same features and benefits that field-proven AIT format has come to be known for, such as the compact form-factor, Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media, Memory-in-Cassette (optional), and ALDC compression technology.

Sony AIT-3 Drives

  • High capacity storage for data archiving and protection – up to 100 GB native storage capacity, or 260 GB compressed (2.6:1) in a compact, 3.5" half-height form-factor.
  • Sustained data trasfer rate of 12 MB/s native and 32.2 MB/s compressed (assuming 2.6:1) provides high performance for today's most demanding environments – backup to 43.2 GB/hour native or 112 GB/hour compressed (assuming 2.6:1).
  • Extremely durable Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media – provides an extraordinarily reliable and virtually contamination-free environment reducing the need for periodic cleaning.
  • Sophisticated data access capability with Remote Memory-In-Cassette (R-MIC), a 64-kbit memory chip embedded into the data cartridge – provides high speed file location and file access.
  • Super Head Cleaner™ mechanism – provides an automated cleaning solution, increasing head life and reducing the need for periodic cleaning.
  • Helical scan recording writes the tape in one pass with a slow tape speed – reduces wear-and-tear on the tape media and drive, increasing reliability and head life.
  • Backward read and write compatible with AIT-1 and AIT-2 media – offers flexibility and convenience, and provides investment protection.

Sony AIT-4 Drives
Storage capacities continue to skyrocket as businesses are creating data at astounding rates. Companies depend on the availability and integrity of that data. Yet, the threat of data loss is on the rise, whether it be from viruses, natural disasters, human error, or hardware/software malfunction. IT managers are challenged with implementing a solution that provides reliable, high performance backup to sustain shrinking backup windows, and high capacity to support continuing data growth. All this while maximizing shrinking budgets.

Sony's AIT-4 drives are a culmination of years of research and development and innovation in recording technologies. Sony's engineering expertise has resulted in industry-leading reliability and density.2 AIT-4's superior reliability comes from the use of the very durable and pure AME media, slow moving tape through the use of helical scan recording, and automatic head cleaning mechanism. The extraordinary density achieved with AIT-4 provides up to 200 GB native on a single 8mm cartridge. These compact cartridges allow for more efficient use of space so more media cartridges can be stored on less shelf space. A native transfer rate of 24 MB/s provides backup of up to 86.4 GB per hour. What's more, AIT-4 drives are priced extremely competitively when compared cost per GB to other competing technologies. AIT-4 -— Fast. Reliable. High capacity. Cost-effective. Problem solved.

Sony AIT-E Turbo Drive
Many end-users are finding themselves asking the question, "Is it time to migrate to a different tape format?" Often, users hesitate to migrate due to the initial investment in overhauling existing hardware, and incompatibility between the media used by competing formats. However, increasing capacity and performance requirements make it difficult, if not impossible, to avoid over the long run. Migration is inevitable.

Sony's new AIT-E Turbo drives are based on the field-proven, high-density, high-performance AIT tape technology. AIT-E Turbo drives offer a new entry point into the AIT family, providing an ideal migration path for DDS users. And with forward compatibility with the AIT-1 Turbo drives, end-users can rest assured that there is a growth strategy already in place to meet increasing capacity and performance requirements. What's more, AIT-E Turbo drives offer a low-cost entry point into the AIT format. AIT – A hallmark of Sony's commitment to technological excellence.
