POS Security: 5 Ways To Protect Against Data Breaches

Earlier this year, a string of eateries in the Pacific Northwest experienced security breaches, with 290 restaurants exposing customers’ credit card info. The restaurants included well-known names like Dairy Queen, and small businesses like Flat Tail Brewing Company and Laurelwood Brewing. The common thread between these businesses was the attacks took aim at vulnerabilities within their point of sale (POS) security.

According to a Verizon Data Breach Investigation Report, nearly 15 percent of all data breaches in 2013 occurred because of POS vulnerabilities. And based on the patterns we’ve seen in 2014, the numbers will increase in 2015 and continue to wreak havoc on consumers and businesses alike.

What’s even more troubling is that many of these breaches were easily preventable — a fact no one is really talking about. While a few were the result of sophisticated assaults, most were the result of lax security on the part of the business owners and around the POS solution.
