Free antivirus software commands 42% of the market, but these solutions do not have total domination. The reality is that competition is alive and well in this highly fragmented sector. Global security software sales are expected to eclipse $16.5B in 2010, according to research firm Gartner. The skyrocketing sales are an 11.3% increase from the $14.8B recorded in 2009, when the struggling economy led to only 7% growth.
According to analysts at Gartner, overall, security will remain one of the fastest-growing areas within the enterprise software market. Growing complexities with malware and its distribution will lead many organizations to invest in endpoint security products during upcoming years.
