Motorola's Mesh WAN Solutions Delivers Wireless Connectivity at Highway Speeds
The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), today announced the latest addition to its innovative Mesh Wide Area Network (MWAN) portfolio – the Vehicle Mounted Modem (VMM) 4300. Designed to deliver wireless broadband connectivity at highway speeds, the VMM 4300 provides public transportation organizations and public safety agencies with the opportunity to extend mobile applications and video to buses, trains, public works vehicles and police cars for increased productivity and improved safety.
”Extending wireless broadband access to moving vehicles requires technologies that can ensure reliable and secure connectivity despite environmental challenges that can negatively affect service,” said Jake Brecheen, chief systems architect, Pro2Serve. “As transportation agencies look to leverage bandwidth intensive applications like video, they will need technologies that can deliver and sustain high throughput rates over a wide range of vehicle speeds.”
The use of wireless technologies in the transportation market is becoming more prevalent, driven by concerns over the safety and security of passengers, the need for operational efficiencies, increasing environmental concerns and the implementation of passenger services designed to make public transportation more attractive. The VMM 4300 solution leverages Motorola’s field-proven MeshConnex™ routing technology and Opportunistic Radio Link Adaptation (ORLA) to enable reliable and secure mobile access to multiple voice, video and data applications, including advanced passenger information services. Working in tandem with a well-designed MWAN 4300 network, Motorola’s solution can maintain reliable and secure multi-megabit connections to the train or bus, enabling advanced services that can help improve passenger safety, streamline the operations or enhance the passenger experience by offering WiFi connections during their daily commute.
Motorola’s VMM 4300 also meets the growing data needs of public safety personnel around the world. Police cars have become advanced technology hubs, with computers, multiple cameras and other advanced communication devices all installed in a typical cruiser. The data rates provided by the MWAN 4300 network far surpass those available through operator data cards, enabling new applications, such as streaming video from the moving vehicle or accessing real-time video surveillance footage for better situational awareness. Motorola’s VMM 4300 offers a high-powered radio that can be configured in a 5.8, 5.4 or 4.9 GHz band for wireless backhaul connectivity and easily installed in the trunk of a police car, providing megabit data connections even during high-speed maneuvers.
“Motorola continues to innovate in delivering mobile mesh technologies to enterprise and government customers worldwide,” said Chip Yager, director of operations, Mesh Networks Product Group, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions. “The latest addition to Motorola’s proven mesh WAN portfolio offers a cost-effective alternative to existing solutions. The VMM 4300 enables transportation agencies to better monitor the safety of passengers, track equipment usage and provide travelers with access to real-time information or the Internet, while also helping public safety professionals leverage live video surveillance footage for improved situational awareness en route to incident scenes.”
The VMM 4300 will be available for purchase in North America starting in the second quarter of 2009. Global availability is expected in the third quarter of 2009.
Motorola offers a comprehensive portfolio of wireless solutions designed to enable the truly wireless enterprise — from large enterprises with locations all over the world to branch offices and small businesses. Delivering wireless voice and data coverage both indoor and outdoor — Motorola's innovative wireless enterprise portfolio includes fixed broadband, mesh, enterprise wireless LAN, voice-over-wireless LAN and Motorola AirDefense wireless security solutions. With time-proven resiliency, security and performance equal to or greater than that of a wired network, Motorola’s solutions substantially reduce network deployment and maintenance costs, help ensure the availability of cost-effective wireless connectivity in every corner of the enterprise, and enable mobile access to voice and data applications traditionally tethered to the desk. The result is the truly wireless enterprise — offering full mobility at a fraction of the cost of a traditional wired network.
