The potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) sparked many ideas throughout 2014. Looking ahead to what 2015 could bring, in an LNS Research blog post, Matthew Littlefield makes three predictions related to the IoT and industry:

  1. 2015 will be the year an industrial IoT platform will emerge.  Littlefield predicts the rise of a new platform built for application development, connectivity, analytics, and cloud.
  2. Industry will deploy smart connected assets. Littlefield says, “Advances in networking and connectivity technologies, especially with the increasing number of partnerships between traditions IT/telecom and industrial automation vendors, will enable OEMs and asset owners to offer new services and business models.”
  3. Smart connected operations will enable new ways to manufacture.  He says, “Machines, materials, assets, and people will communicate independently and make local decisions based on connectivity to the larger supply and demand chains that will increase flexibility and enable new modes of manufacturing like mass-customization.”

Business Solutions Magazine, also citing LNS Research, reports the development of IoT apps and advances in security for devices will also promote adoption of IoT solutions in manufacturing.

On its website, Accenture, a provider of management consulting, technology, and outsourcing services, asserts that “the Industrial IoT will transform companies and countries, and usher in a new era of economic growth and competitiveness.  We see a future where the intersection of people, data and intelligent machines will have far-reaching impacts on the productivity, efficiency, and operations of industries around the world.”
