IBM Becomes First OEM Customer To Ship Quantum's GoVault Removable Drive

Quantum Corp. (NYSE:DSS) , a global leader in storage, today announced IBM has become the first OEM distributor to ship GoVault, a removable disk drive backup, recovery and archive solution. Building on their established OEM relationship, IBM is leveraging Quantum's storage expertise to deliver a simplified data protection approach for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB) and distributed server environments. IBM is making the GoVault drive available as a low-cost removable storage option within its popular System x server family, providing a cornerstone for its customers to implement a set of data protection best practices.

"IBM System x servers provide the high performance, availability, manageability and flexibility customers need on top of industry standard components," said Alex Yost, director, IBM System x. "We're excited to work with Quantum to offer customers the GoVault backup, recovery and archive options, which complement the portfolio of industry leading server and storage products IBM already offers. We firmly believe the simplified, rugged technology and emphasis on adopting backup best practices will alleviate many of the issues our customers face in the data protection process."

Customers can purchase the GoVault removable drive from IBM as a server-embedded solution including rugged, removable 80 GB (gigabyte) disk-drive cartridges. Backups can be completed using popular backup software applications or by drag-and-drop file transfer. With a transfer rate of 94 GB per hour, the GoVault removable drive provides high-performance backup and restores along with a durable, long-term cartridge archive life. Additionally, Quantum includes password protection on the GoVault cartridges to provide data security in the event a cartridge is lost or stolen.

"Quantum is pleased to extend its long-standing relationship with IBM to deliver an easy-to-use storage solution for helping its System x server customers protect their business-critical data assets," said Rob Pickell, vice president of worldwide marketing for Quantum. "This agreement reinforces our two companies' commitment to deliver solutions that inspire the adoption of best practices for data backup, recovery and archive."

The GoVault solution offers a low-cost alternative to traditional storage options, encouraging best practices for customers by targeting smaller businesses and distributed environments that may not regularly back up servers and often do not have offsite copies of data. A simplified GoVault cartridge best practices rotation scheme ensures that one cartridge is in use within the dock, while another cartridge is available for fast restore when necessary. The third cartridge is kept offsite for disaster recovery purposes.
