Drive Accuracy And Cost Savings With Biometric Identification

This white paper by Larry Dawson from Accu-Time Systems takes a look at advancements in modern biometric technology and its effect on workforce management (WFM), access control, security, and identification now and in the future. Numerous biometric technologies have been deployed through the past twenty years, and while some were impractical, some remain in use today. Iris scanning is a technology that has existed for many years, but only now have we developed computers and cameras powerful and low-cost enough to make the technology feasible.

Another technology discussed in this white paper is vein pattern recognition technology which has found its place in multiple uses. It works by using optics to “look” beneath about a millimeter of skin and then use the light absorption of blood cells to create a vein pattern map. Unique points in the image are collected and then used to compare to further scans for identification purposes. With proper vein maps and topical surface templates, fooling this system becomes extremely difficult and error rates are reduced dramatically.

A more commonly known technology, facial recognition, is also becoming more prevalent in mobile and fixed time and attendance devices. At present, however, the technology is not reliable enough to be used for every applications because the error and false acceptance rates are too high. Future prospects for this technology look promising as the technology is rapidly improving.
