Now more than ever, Discover® Network growth is relevant to VARs

Acting on the successful October 2004 Supreme Court decision in a U.S. Department of Justice case that led to a more competitive marketplace, Discover® Network, a business unit of Discover Financial Services, has transformed itself. It has changed from a merchant acquiring business and a network that supported a single product, Discover® Card, into a leading payments network that supports multiple products, issuers, and acquirers. In fact, Discover Network now markets and supports a full range of credit, debit, and prepaid products for many major issuers, including GE Money (for Walmart® and Sam’s Club® branded credit cards), HSBC, and Alliance Data.

Since 2006, Discover Network has expanded domestic acceptance through the acquisition of the PULSE® EFT network, one of the nation’s largest ATM/debit networks, giving Discover Network Cardholders cash access to over 265,000 ATMs and 120,000 in-lobby bank branches nationwide. Discover Network has also signed acquiring agreements with all of the major acquirers and acquirer processors, including First Data Corp., Global Payments Inc., Elavon, TSYS Acquiring Solutions, RBS WorldPay, Chase Paymentech and Bank of America Merchant Services to grow acceptance in the small merchant community.

In addition, Discover Network Cards have become a leading payments choice around the world. In 2008, Discover purchased Diners Club International, a global payments network with acceptance in 185 countries and territories. Discover also formed a strategic alliance with China Unionpay, the only national payments network in China, with over 1 billion cards, and now Discover Network is the most widely accepted U.S. card brand in mainland China. The global footprint has also expanded to Japan, through the strategic alliance with JCB, the only global payment brand based in Japan.

Get connected and gain a competitive edge

Discover Network is more than just 6011. With the addition of multiple issuers and numerous card products, Discover Network has additional IINs (Issuer Identification Numbers - the Discover Network equivalent of BINs).

Discover Network has diligently assisted its acquirers to ensure their merchants’ terminals can support the new BINs. However, many VARs are still unaware of the additional BINs and may be missing out on revenue opportunities simply because their merchants’ terminals are not programmed to accept all Discover Network Card types.

VARs can obtain test card numbers and view the most up-to-date BINs at the Discover Network VAR Connection. In addition the VAR Connection provides:
  • Ongoing e-mail communication
  • Online updates and guidance
  • E-mail alerts
  • Bulletins and alerts
  • POS testing tools and resources
  • Direct access to Discover Network experts
