5 Current Trends In Video Surveillance Technology

By Bob Ehlers, V.P. Marketing and Vertical Market Development, RGB Spectrum

Over the past decade, demand for video surveillance has rapidly increased. With the introduction of megapixel cameras, companies are deploying 4K or Ultra HD surveillance systems to cover larger areas with fewer cameras. The adoption of ultra-high resolution surveillance is driving some key trends in video processing and analysis.

  1. 4K Video Collaboration

With wider fields of view, longer focal distances, and more “pixels on target,” 4K security surveillance offers a number of benefits, particularly in collaborative work environments.

When operators zoom in on 1080p or 720p video or scale it out over a “video wall” array of monitors, images can become pixelated or “blocky.” However, the higher pixel densities of 4K video allows images to be scaled larger and/or zoomed in further, while maintaining clarity.

At facilities like sports venues, 4K resolution is important because it enables a wide field of view for tracking situations in real time, while also providing enough pixels to zoom in and see fine details, like a suspect’s face, without distortion or blurring.
Security operators may also utilize 4K video on their desktops for similar purposes. Affordable 4K monitors enable the detailed display of ultra-high resolution, wide-field-of-view images, while 4K video processing and display systems allow multiple operators to simultaneously view and respond to visual data and alerts in real time.
