Choosing Between EMV And Cloud-Based Software?

State Of Cloud

Introduction

Navotar, a car rental POS software provider, is cloud-based to promote convenience and flexibility for an industry always on the move. Navotar had pursued several different payment options and chose Cardknox as a gateway to support and integrate EMV payments with their software.

The Challenge

The rental car industry’s payments tend to be highly disputed, and since the October 2015 liability shift, EMV certification is essential. Customers tend to dispute rental car charges for several reasons, mainly because:

  • It is difficult to ascertain which customer incurred damage on a vehicle, so many customers feel they were unfairly charged for damages they did not cause.
  • There are numerous surcharges and add-ons to rental fees.
  • Cards are often authorized and later charged, which can cause confusion about rental fee totals.

Proposed Alternatives

Navotar could opt with standalone terminals to process EMV transactions that remain separate from the POS software. However, this compounds the issue of billing discrepancies and customer confusion. Line items and the numerous fees associated with the rental car industry become unclear and reduce the transparency with customers. Additionally, standalone terminals are a reconciliation nightmare for accountants.

The second option would be keying or swiping transactions with an online gateway, such as Authorize.net. However, this option would not support EMV and therefore Navotar would be left without liability protection in a chargeback-heavy industry.

Cardknox’s Solution

Cardknox provided a payment solution for Navotar that allows for EMV transactions on cloud-based POS software. It allowed merchants on Navotar to utilize their full suite of features such as authorizing credit cards for trip reservations and confirming travel plans on the Navotar portal.

Cardknox offers a unique EMV solution for cloud-based POS systems. A payment terminal connects to the computer through the USB port and authorizes the transactions while still communicating with the software.

The Cardknox EMV solution for browser-based POS systems can be implemented with just a few lines of code. Typically, developers can complete the integration in under 24 hours. The only changes to the cloud-based POS is modifying the HTML form to point to the Cardknox URL and pass along the amount as a parameter. Our proprietary software installed on the host computer will pass the amount onto the terminal. The entire communication between the terminal, credit card, and payment processor is handled automatically by Cardknox.

Navotar needed a solution that addressed both their need for EMV and a cloud-based software; Cardknox’s team of developers was able to deliver that.

The Result
“Our vehicle rental companies benefitted tremendously from this partnership,” said Neeraj Kaneria, VP of Sales and Marketing at Navotar. “They can now process cards conveniently via our cloud-based POS. It’s an efficient system that virtually eliminates the hassles of overdue payments and collections.”
