Capture Software: Kofax Technology Helps Streamline Information Capture For AncestryDPS's 6 Billion Record Database
Kofax, the world's largest information capture vendor, today announced the successful installation of its Ascent Capture® and INDICIUS® technology at AncestryDPS, a leading digital preservation service. The contract provided an overall solution for AncestryDPS to optimize the processing of over 9 million images per month.
AncestryDPS is part of the MyFamily.com, Inc. network of products and services that provides the tools to enable people to discover who they are and where they come from. Ancestry.com is the No. 1 online source for family history information, including the Web's largest collection of historical records with over 6 billion names. AncestryDPS processes 100 thousand document pages per day including census records, birth/death records, military records, community directories, immigration records and even some as much as 300 years old.
AncestryDPS needed a highly customizable solution to help capture the information from the myriad of documents they scan each day. They enlisted the help of Kofax Certified Solution Provider (CSP) DoxTek, a provider of electronic document management solutions, to help find that solution. DoxTek recommended the Kofax Ascent Platform and INDICIUS product because of their ability to process and classify unstructured, semi-structured and structured documents including handwritten pages.
"With the installation of Ascent and INDICIUS, we can now automate many of the documents that we use to key manually," said Shawn Reid, development director at AncestryDPS. "Even the 200 year old handwritten documents gain process improvements due to additional validation and correction at the keying operator, rather than later when it is more expensive to make changes. We capture an average of 100 thousand document pages per day and using the Kofax solution will improve the processing of some of these documents by as much as 10 times."
Since there are no guidelines for the types of records AncestryDPS captures, custom modules were created to ensure the process ran flawlessly. Through these workflow modules, AncestryDPS has created various add-on solutions that accommodate the wide variety of document types that are processed.
"The Ascent platform was meant to take on complex projects like that of AncestryDPS," said Rob Klatell, CEO of Kofax's parent company, DICOM Group. "By adding the INDICIUS component, AncestryDPS can automatically capture information and allow streamlined validation for all types of documents to ensure the process will run as smoothly as possible."
