Building A System In Support Of The IoT

A man heads back home after jogging. A hallway door camera identifies him through face recognition and allows access to living quarters. As soon as he removes his shoe, embedded sensors transmits data to his mobile and a message pops up: “You have burned 500 calories today!” He rests on a couch and next beep sound on mobile alerts, “Oven preheat started. Breakfast ready in 20 minutes.” Then, he moves to the bathroom and steps into the shower saying “Shower on.” Voice recognition sensors trigger the water. Later, he takes a seat at dining table and enjoys his breakfast when a notification arrives, “The automobile diagnostics are done. It seems that the car needs a gas refill. Start in 5 minutes to avoid traffic delays on Route 66.” As he leaves his home, the lights go off and door locks automatically.

Now this may sound like it is straight out of a science fiction movie, but this is going to happen in the near future, and it’s called Internet of Things (IoT).

Day by day, the number of devices we connect to the Internet increases. These devices include smartphones, smart televisions, tablets, etc. Similarly, the Internet of Things is connecting our appliances like a refrigerator, cars, and microwave oven to a network and embedding computational capability to send and extract similar information from other devices.
