BarTender 9.3 From Seagull Scientific Includes Many New Features; Also Prices And Names Changed

Seagull Scientific has released version 9.3 of their BarTender label and RFID software. Newly added are support for weighing scales, improved data entry forms, and a variety of more powerful integration features, including improved IBM WebSphere functions. Additionally, with BarTender version 9.3, two of the editions have been renamed and some prices changed.
BarTender can now directly accept data from weighing scales. Users simply drag the scale control from the on-screen toolbox into a data entry form, specify the desired model, and start weighing and printing. Seagull claims their new weighing scale support is the most powerful available in any label software package today.
Version 9.3 expands upon BarTender's features for connecting to peripherals and integrating with other software:
- Serial Port Triggers: The Commander middleware application now adds integration support for a wide variety of serial devices, including weighing scales.
- Bidirectional WebSphere Printing: Commander's IBM WebSphere support now supports HTTP posting, which allows for bidirectional print communications.
- Commander Variables: Now users can store values into a single location and reference them from multiple Commander commands.
One Edition Name Phased Out; Two Product Names Changed There is no longer an edition called "RFID Enterprise." Instead, the editions previously called "Enterprise" and "RFID Enterprise" have now been combined into the new "Automation" edition at prices comparable to what the "Enterprise" edition used to sell for. Also, the previously-named "Enterprise Print Server" edition is now called "Enterprise Automation." (It continues to support RFID.)
Previously, Seagull had three editions that began with the word "Enterprise." This has been replaced with two editions: "Automation" and "Enterprise Automation."
The reasons Seagull gives for changing the names are:
- Having three editions containing the word "Enterprise" was confusing.
- The new name "Automation" clarifies which editions can be controlled from within other software.
- Seagull has reserved the word "Enterprise" for their most powerful edition.
Seagull's "Automation" edition has not had any of its powerful features removed. However, the Enterprise Automation edition continues to provide the broadest enterprise management functions, most powerful integration capabilities, most complete security system, and features for centralized and web-based printing. More details on the differences between the editions are described on Seagull's website.
