Solutions II Brings Quicker Backup And More Revenue To Pharmaceutical Market

Business Solutions, February 2003

Geneva Pharmaceuticals is one of the largest manufacturers of generic pharmaceutical products in the United States. The company currently manufactures over 200 products in over 500 package sizes, and has 1000+ employees. In the generic drug industry, competition is fierce, and margins are rather low. Added to these pressures was the fact that Geneva experienced huge data growth (the company's data was increasing at a rate of 60 GB per month). Geneva realized that they needed to take a look at their IT infrastructure from a scalability and availability standpoint.

Storage Overhaul
In order to help Geneva Pharmaceuticals solve its scalability and availability problems, Solutions-II, Inc. implemented a strategy for them over the course of 30 months. Solutions-II is a sales and marketing organization that provides advanced data delivery technologies. The strategy included an IBM LTO 3584 library running in tandem with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). TSM was chosen because of its relational database, tape management operations, and platform support. Solutions-II then added a 4TB Enterprise Storage Server F20 that addresses Geneva's critical needs in terms of databases and enterprise applications.

Since the IBM infrastructure was put in place, Geneva has seen a 50% performance gain and a reduction from 8 hours to 2 hours for their backup window. The management platform put in place by Solutions-II allows Geneva to scale with their needs, whether it is acquiring a new company or introducing a new drug.
