Integrator Implements Mobile Solution For National Cable Company

Business Solutions, October 2003

In spring 2002, Cox Communications, Inc. (Atlanta) began to upgrade its field computers, which were approaching the end of a three-year warranty period. The company wanted to improve wireless coverage, processing power, and technician efficiency by implementing a new solution. The cost of maintenance of its former system also played a role in its decision.

National Customer Replaces 20% Of Its Hardware
Cox Communications turned to national integrator, ICM Corporation (Atlanta), for a mobile solution. The integrator's bundled kit included Gamber-Johnson's (Stevens Point, WI) vehicle mounting components, Panasonic's Toughbook PCs, and Tempo integrated Signal Level Meters. By spring 2003, Cox Communications replaced about 20% of the first generation equipment with the new system and was teaming with ICM Corporation to implement installs in its other national locations.

As a result of improved wireless coverage and an integrated CD-ROM for mapping client locations, service ticket completion rates and technician efficiency rose. ICM provided a three-year warranty on parts/labor for the Toughbook PCs and Gamber-Johnson mounting components. This led to a decrease in the total cost of ownership, compared to Cox Communications' former system. The screens used in the mounting system allow the Cox Communications' technicians to work in any outdoor conditions. Lastly, the failure rate (downtime) has been held under 5% annually with this solution, helping to eliminate maintenance costs.
