C-Store Chain Rolls Out New Systems For 400 Stores In 140 Days

For many of Dade Behring's customers, next-day delivery is not good enough. The $1.3 billion laboratory instrument manufacturer often has to ensure same-day delivery. Integrating technologies with its new SAP system helps Dade Behring deliver the goods on time.

Silcorp Ltd., Canada's largest convenience store (c-store) chain, has installed over 500 TEC ST-5500 PC-based POS terminals running ECR Software Corporation's OpenPOS software. Silcorp has over 1000 store locations under three banners: Mac's, Mike's Mart, and Becker's. Silcorp is also the largest Subway franchisee with over 90 Subway shops in Silcorp c-stores.

New Stores Require Automation
Recently, Silcorp purchased the Becker's Milk Company, which included over 400 Becker's c-stores. Management's first order of business was to automate the point of sale (POS) and reporting systems at each of the Becker's locations. The task of automation was given to Silcorp's Retail Systems Director, Grant Schwartz. Schwartz and his staff were given 140 days by management to select vendor partners, integrate with Silcorp headquarters, and completely install the new system in all 400 stores. The vendor partners selected were ECR Software Corporation for POS software automation, Canyon Logic System for back room integration to the head office, and TEC Canada for the POS hardware. Toronto-based POS dealer Armagh Cash Register represented ECR Software and assisted in the initial evaluation and integration process.

Vendors Work Achieve Timetable Goals
"We had only one chance to get it right," says Schwartz, "and that's why we selected ECR Software. ECR worked closely with Canyon Logic, TEC Canada, and my staff. Together we rolled out 400 stores in 140 days from scratch - on budget and on schedule."

While simultaneously integrating with the existing information system at Silcorp's head office, the new system also provides transaction-level detail security along with POS scanning. Modifications have also been provided to accommodate all of the needs of the Subway locations.
