Antispam Solution Boosts Productivity At School District

Spring Independent School District is located 20 miles north of downtown Houston in an urban area of Harris County. The school district consists of 28,230 prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in 25 schools.

The school district, like many midsized businesses, is challenged with eliminating spam traffic and unwanted and inappropriate content from the Internet. "After numerous complaints regarding the amount of spam our employees were receiving, we realized we had to address this issue immediately," said Alan Berry, Novell network specialist, Spring Independent School District. "However, we wanted a solution that would easily integrate with our current infrastructure." The school district selected McAfee's SpamKiller e1000 appliance based on its ease of use, its ability to integrate with existing products such as McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), and its ability to provide multiple methods for ferreting out offensive and dangerous spam.

With the McAfee SpamKiller e1000 appliance, the Spring Independent School District is able to scan each incoming e-mail as it reaches the district's Internet gateway, ensuring that valuable network resources are not wasted by spam. "McAfee's SpamKiller appliance has not only helped us achieve our goal of decreasing spam traffic by more than 50% since the product was first deployed, but McAfee also made the overall process easy to manage," says Berry. By alleviating the burden of unwanted messages, the new solution has helped the district increase worker productivity, as employees no longer have to waste time determining what is valid e-mail and what is spam.
