Faxing electronic medical records/electronic health records (EMR/EHR) is something most doctors’ offices do daily, with referrals and insurance documentation almost as common.

All of this information falls under HIPAA and other regulations, with which compliance can be rather challenging when using traditional fax machines. The need to secure access to the fax machine, to confirm delivery, and to maintain usage logs are all onerous, but there is also the waste of resources that comes from printing paper and then sending it, and the waste of time that comes from scanning received faxes into your own EMR/EHR system, besides the possibility of having a confidential document accidentally/intentionally being seen by someone who wasn’t meant to see it while the person it’s addressed to still needs to pick it up from the fax machine. And that is where a fax server application comes in to play.
