Industry leaders shared their insights during the View From The Top: Leadership Panel Discussion moderated by Jim Roddy, president of Business Solutions magazine, at this year’s Retail Solutions Providers Association’s RetailNOW.

Topics during the panel discussion included the transition to the as-a-Service business model in the retail vertical. Panelist Arnie Bellini, CEO of ConnectWise, comments, “The great news is history repeats itself, so you can learn from those who went before you … There’s an evolutionary model in it that you can follow,” Bellini adds, “but the as a service model is here to stay.”

The panel also weighed in on EMV, the global standard for debit and credit cards that leverages chip card technology, and the October 2015 deadline when liability for transactions made with counterfeit cards will shift to acquirers and merchants — and the least compliant party will be responsible for covering the full cost of the fraudulent transaction.

Panelist Matt Taylor, president of Integrated Payments for Mercury Payment Systems, a Vantiv company, says, “EMV is big. Let’s face it, the security threats are increasing, and there’s a lot of high profile activity. EMV, whether or not you agree it's the right technology, is not going away.” Taylor adds that the value chain is beginning to make investments: working with software developers, piloting EMV solutions, and working with VARs to sell them, “so that we can remove the friction getting it on the counter tops.”

Joining Bellini and Taylor on the panel were Mike Baur, CEO of ScanSource; John Waldron, president for Honeywell Scanning and Mobility; Steve Cuntz, CEO and chairman of Blue Star; Ray Carlin, HP vice president and general manager for the retail solutions global business unit; and Jay Miley, Ingram Micro's vice president and general management of its advanced technology division in the United States.  Additional discussion topics included mobility, the state of the retail industry today, and sustaining a channel business.

RetailNOW 2014, hosted by the Retail Solutions Providers Association (RSPA), was conducted Aug. 3-6 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, FL. For more information on the event, go to
