Selection, Use And Timely Replacement Of Lithium Ion Batteries

Source: Datamax - O'Neil

In The fastest growing battery system, lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries are used where high-energy density and light weight is of prime importance. The Li-ion is more expensive than other systems and must follow strict guidelines to assure safety. Applications include notebook computers and cellular phones.

The table below compares the characteristics of the six most commonly used rechargeable battery systems in terms of energy density, cycle life, exercise requirements and cost. The figures are based on average ratings of commercially available batteries at the time of publication. Exotic batteries with above average ratings are not included.

A lithium-ion battery provides between 500 and 1000 discharge/charge cycles, depending on temperature and other variables during charging and discharging. The Li-Ion battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges. We do not allow the Li-Ion battery in our printers to fully discharge (which is considered to be at 3.0V per cell).
