Experts explain how payment hardware upgrades bring a host of exciting new functionality retailers are excited to adopt.

Recent industry studies, including ones run by Business Solutions magazine, show that EMV adoption among SMB retailers has been slower than the credit card industry would like. In many cases, retailers believe that the increased liability doesn’t outweigh the costs associated with upgrading payment devices or their POS systems. Smart VARs and ISVs combat this way of thinking in two ways. First, it’s important to stress to retailers that the security of payment information isn’t something to be cheap about. Once large retailers are secure, criminals will set their sights on smaller, low-hanging fruit. Small merchants certainly aren’t safe. Second, many EMV solutions today don’t just deliver added security, they can bring additional functionality that can help a retailer in many ways.
