Inaugural CompTIA Cybersecurity Summit Set For Breakaway 2010
CompTIA, the non-profit trade association for the information technology (IT) industry, announced recently industry leaders and government policy makers will gather next month for the inaugural CompTIA Cybersecurity Summit.
The summit is set for Aug. 12 as part of Breakaway 2010, the premier event for IT channel companies in North America. Breakaway 2010 is scheduled for Aug. 9 - 12 at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, San Antonio, Texas.
"The IT security landscape changes so rapidly, with the volume and virulence of threats growing almost daily, that it's difficult for even the most seasoned security professionals to stay ahead of the cyber criminals and hackers," said Kelly Ricker, vice president, events and conferences, CompTIA. "At our inaugural Cybersecurity Summit we'll bring together leaders from the IT industry and government to discuss how we can work together to mitigate the number and impact of cyber threats in the private and public sectors."
The CompTIA Cybersecurity Summit will include a keynote speech and two panel discussions.
The Hon. Howard Schmidt, special assistant to the President and cybersecurity coordinator for the Obama Administration, is tentatively scheduled to open the summit with a keynote address. Schmidt is responsible for coordinating interagency cybersecurity policy development and implementation and coordinating engagement with federal, state, local, international and private sector cybersecurity partners.
The Cybersecurity Power Panel will convene at 10 a.m. (CDT) Thursday, Aug. 12, to discuss the current and future state of IT security. Scheduled panelists include Mark Cohn, vice president, enterprise security, Unisys Corporation; Patrick Gray, principal security strategist, Cisco; Jacob Olcott, counsel, Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and Jeff Reich, director of operations, Institute for Cyber Security, University of Texas. Eric Chabrow, executive editor of GovInfoSecurity.com, will serve as moderator.
At 11 a.m. (CDT), a second industry panel will discuss "Security in the Cloud." Scheduled panelists include Bradley Anstis, vice president of technology strategy, M86 Security; John Kane, vice president, corporate services, Afilias; Sam Masiello, global director of messaging security research, McAfee; Jeff Ragusa, Google Apps SMB Channel Lead, Google Inc.; and Ronald Ritchey, principal, Booz Allen Hamilton. Jeff Reich, director of operations, Institute for Cyber Security, University of Texas and a founding member of the Cloud Security Alliance, will serve as moderator.
The Cybersecurity Summit is the latest activity in CompTIA's ongoing efforts to identify and promote IT security best practices for organizations and individuals. The association's security initiatives include CompTIA Security+ certification, an internationally recognized credential that validates an IT professional's competencies in a range of security matters; the CompTIA Security Trustmark, a business-level credential achieved by organizations that consistently follow security best practices; and the CompTIA IT Security Community, a group of industry leaders focused on challenges and opportunities in the IT security field. CompTIA also conducts several major IT security-themed research projects each year; and its Public Advocacy department is actively engaged in monitoring and shaping cybersecurity legislative initiatives at all levels of government.
