CompTIA Offers Legal Services Benefit To Premier Members

Last week, CompTIA offered its first professional service benefit. The CompTIA Legal Services Program offers legal services to the association’s premier members.

IT solutions providers work in a complex legal environment and many serve clients in regulated industries, such as healthcare. In addition, many CompTIA members are SMBs with limited resources and limited access to legal counsel that specializes in this field.

Nancy Hammervik, senior vice president of industry relations for CompTIA, says the association is committed to differentiating premier membership from “registered user” status with added value, and chose legal services as the first professional service benefit because, “This is an area [all members] share, and where they needed the most support.”  

The service, available in the U.S., is administered through InfoTech Law Advocates (ITLA), a law firm dedicated to providing legal representation to small to medium-sized IT companies.

Dan Liutikas, managing attorney of ITLA and chief legal officer for CompTIA, explains the service is designed in response to CompTIA’s members’ needs. He says IT solutions providers hesitate to seek legal counsel, not knowing what it will cost or concerned that every phone call will result in a bill. Through this new service, CompTIA premier members who take advantage of the service receive complimentary company report filing service, as well as a complementary risk assessment based on a questionnaire completed by the IT solutions provider and a one-hour consultation to review an attorney’s analysis of the report. ITLA also determined a fee schedule for other services for CompTIA members to provide transparency into costs. In addition, CompTIA Premier Members can take advantage of complimentary “Quick Calls” for basic questions answered by a legal professional.

Liutikas points out in addition to discounted rates, services from ITLA, which specializes in the needs of IT solutions providers, are offered efficiently by a staff well versed in the needs of the channel. 

Since ChannelCon 2014 in August, more than 70 CompTIA members have been a part of the trial of the service, and CompTIA expects hundreds to take advantage of this opportunity.
