Access Control Trends For 2016

By Bruce Stewart, , Business Development Manager, Access Control, Axis Communications

With the end of the year fast approaching, the industry is abuzz with talk about access control and what’s next. Yet, most of these articles and discussions leave me wondering: what does the future really hold for the access control industry? Let’s look at some of the top trends in access control for 2016.

  1. Wireless Locks. Wireless locks will be an area of growth for resellers next year as they have become a reliable source for securing and controlling access to doors without causing much disruption during installation. There is no need to pull wires to the door, gates or elevator — just the wireless lock installation that communicates to the ‘hub.’ In addition to an easier and quicker installation, end customers benefit from improved flexibility, cost savings and scalability options, especially when the need to secure older buildings (with older systems) arises.
  2. Openness In The Market. Proprietary systems are so last year. Today, more end customers are asking for open platform and open architecture solutions. Both of these give the end customer a choice between using other access hardware with their existing software solutions or integrating both access control and video for a total solution. We have seen this trend with the video market, and we will continue to see the access control market, which traditionally is slower to adapt, follow in 2016.
